Is Ayahuasca Safe?

Understanding the risks, precautions, and protocols that ensure a safe ceremonial experience

Ayahuasca, when taken in the proper ceremonial context with experienced guides and appropriate medical screening, has been used safely by indigenous peoples for centuries. However, it is a powerful medicine that requires respect, preparation, and careful attention to contraindications.

At Camino al Sol, your safety is our highest priority. We maintain rigorous protocols that go beyond industry standards to ensure every participant can explore this profound experience with confidence.

Our Safety Approach

Four pillars that ensure your wellbeing throughout the journey

Medical Screening

Every participant completes a comprehensive health questionnaire. We review your medical history, current medications, and mental health background to ensure ayahuasca is appropriate for you.

Experienced Guidance

Our ceremonies are led by taitas with 15+ years of experience, supported by trained facilitators who remain present throughout to ensure physical and emotional safety.

Careful Preparation

We provide detailed preparation guidelines including dietary restrictions, medication protocols, and intention-setting practices to optimize your safety and experience.

Ongoing Support

Your safety extends beyond the ceremony. We offer integration support and remain available for questions and concerns before, during, and after your retreat.

Who Should NOT Take Ayahuasca

Certain conditions and medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca. This is not a complete list—we review each application individually.

  • Heart conditions (particularly serious cardiac issues)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • History of psychosis, schizophrenia, or severe mental illness
  • Bipolar disorder (particularly during manic episodes)
  • Currently taking MAOIs, SSRIs, or SNRIs
  • Taking blood pressure medications
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent surgery or serious physical conditions
  • Active substance addiction (especially stimulants)

If you have any of these conditions or are taking related medications, please be honest in your application. We may still be able to work with you, or we can recommend alternative approaches.
